South Bend Park – Naturalist Walk       May 31 @ 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm

3/30/2015

This large park is a mix of historic landscape, urban impacts and recovering woodlands as well a being an important center for recreation. Located just across from the Lakewood Amphitheater, it holds an important confluence of the South River and a surprising array of native plants, and remnants of the old growth forest.

An enormous old Sycamore tree, likely a regional champion, can be found after a little hiking near the South River, while tiny 400 million year old plants cling to rocks along its banks. A healthy mix of native hardwoods can be found on the upper slopes in the park and many songbirds find cover in these as well as pockets of forest along the waterways.

This walk is offered in partnership with Park Pride.

ZipCar Launch in South Atlanta - Nov. 1

10/31/2014

This Saturday at 9am, ZipCar will be launching it's new car in South Atlanta at Community Grounds - 1297 Jonesboro Rd, Atlanta, GA 30315.

There will be free coffee and pastries, a ribbon cutting ceremony, and an opportunity to sign up for their service.
I am asking that we have as many residents from South Atlanta, Lakewood Heights, Chosewood, Peoplestown, High Point, and others here between 9am and 10:30am as possible. Here is why:

1) ZipCar is treating us to the coffee and pastries :)
2) This is a major corporation investing in our neighborhood and taking a risk on us (ZipCar is owned by Avis).  We need to show them, and others, that South Atlanta can support economic investment such as this.  If ZipCar is successful, they may place cars other places and/or other companies will begin to take notice.
3) I truly believe that ZipCar can be beneficial for our neighbors with limited access to transportation.  However, many of them/us may not know about ZipCar.  Bring them out, or come yourself and get educated so you can help people know what it's for and how to us it.

I hope that you can make this a priority for Saturday morning.  Let's show them we support their investment in us!

We are proud to announce that Sustainable Lakewood has successfully gotten Lakewood Heights to be selected as one of three beta communities for Sustainable Atlanta's EcoDistricts program!

What does this mean? It means that Lakewood Heights is destined to become a leader in building a community that is sustainable in its use of energy and water, as well as creative in solving the problems of waste and transportation in a way that benefits the environment and the community members at the same time. Read more about the EcoDistrict framework and support us as we move to complete phase 1 by this September!

Teamworks volunteers join up with Sustainable Lakewood to clean up a major dump site and a back alley in the Lakewood Heights neighborhood. The dumpster was donated by the City of Atlanta. We were very excited about the tire roundup with the crew of Randy, Tina, and Teamworks, sponsored by Councilwoman Joyce Shephard.
