Sustainable Lakewood

A fun event to help restore our very own South Bend Park!

Sustainable Lakewood, EcoAddendum (Eco-A) and councilwoman Carla Smith are hosting the first annual Atlanta Kudzu Festival in South Bend Park! Join us on Saturday, September 24 from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. to raise funds towards restoring the park's 60-acre forest as well as walking and biking trails. The event will include nature hikes to explore South Bend's abundant, natural space and workshops to learn creative ways to eradicate the kudzu vine.

We need your help to preserve this restorative green space for Lakewood Heights and its surrounding communities!

What needs improvement?

Landscape

Much of the trails are in need of major maintenance to restore clear pathways throughout the park. Certain areas are so overgrown with grass that their as tall as some visitors!

Trails

Our goal is to reclaim and reforest the park's forest, including the removal of invasive plants (such as kudzu) that are a threat to native plant life and the animals who make their home among them.

Activities the whole community will enjoy!

Workshops

Eco-A  along with North Georgia artist and "Kudzu King" Cleve Phillips will teach participants how to turn troublesome kudzu into practical products and artistic creations.

Trees Alive will lead a classroom-style discussion on kudzu removal. Trees Atlanta will
demonstration how to remove kudzu and other pesky vines.

Kudzu Cook-off

Think you can whip up a tasty kudzu dish? Join other creative cooks to showoff your culinary skills. May the best chef win!

Nature Hikes

Hikes will be led by Eco-A, The Georgia Conservancy and Greening Youth Foundation through South Bend's forest for true nature-lovers and adventurous hikers.

Atlanta Audubon Society and Sheep's Work will provide fun opportunities for bird watching and sheep petting.

Music

DJ Derrick G will bring out the right tunes to keep everyone dancing! Don't be shy to show off your best moves under the big pavilion!

Where is South Bend Park?

South Bend is located just down the street from Boys & Girls Club of Metro Atlanta (Lakewood Avenue) across from Lakewood Stadium.
