Nature Hike to the Great Sycamore Tree
2 - 3:30 PM
Free

Deep in South Bend there is an extraordinary sycamore tree. It has an unusually large base and great trunk with classic mottled and bright bark. It's a landmark tree, but it can be little challenging to reach. Eco-A will lead a naturalist walk to this special tree with guest leader Terry Sutton of Cascade Springs Forestry. Be prepared to do just a little scrambling and rock hopping along the creek -- great for the slightly more adventurous urban hiker. We'll see and talk about many natural features of the park along the way.

About EcoAddendum

EcoAddendum leads naturalist walks year-round in Atlanta urban parks and greenspace and natural areas throughout Georgia. We also help public greenspace managers and homeowners restore native landscapes, including educational and volunteer opportunities for adults and young people. Together, we walk in beautiful natural areas and learn about native plants, trees, birds and other wildlife in the spirit of discovery.

About The Georgia Conservancy

The Georgia Conservancy strives to protect Georgia's natural resources by advocating sound environmental policies, advancing sustainable growth practices and facilitating common-ground solutions to environmental challenges.

About Greening Youth Foundation

The Greening Youth Foundation’s (GYF) mission is to work with diverse, undeserved and underrepresented children, youth and young adults in an effort to develop and nurture enthusiastic and responsible environmental stewards. GYF’s cultural based environmental education programming engages children from local communities and exposes them to healthy lifestyle choices in order to create an overall healthy community.

GYF believes that youth and young adults from diverse backgrounds can greatly benefit from the career opportunities presented within the state and federal land management sectors.  Accordingly, GYF continues to develop and strengthen partnerships with land management agencies to provide service and internship opportunities for youth and young adults thereby creating pathways to conservation careers.

About Atlanta Audubon Society

Atlanta Audubon Society is a member-supported, nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting Georgia’s birds and their habitats. We are a thriving, bird-focused organization that combines serious conservation, education, advocacy with activities that build community and foster the joy of birding.

Atlanta Audubon serves all 20 metro Atlanta counties and areas of North Georgia. With a committed staff, a focused board, and a flock of talented volunteers, Atlanta Audubon strives to share our passion with others to connect people with nature and to inspire everyone to be stewards of birds and the environment. We build trust and credibility by being honest, hardworking, and responsible with rigorous attention to sound science and long-term thinking.
Just as bird diversity strengthens ecosystems, the diversity of human experiences, traditions, and viewpoints strengthen our conservation, education, and advocacy efforts.

About Sheep's Work

Sheep's Work uses sheep to remove invasive plants on private and public properties. Quiet and enjoyable, our friendly plant-eaters take about a week to 10 days to defoliate an area infested with English ivy, poison ivy, kudzu, privet, honeysuckle, and other invasive plants without harming trees, soil or the use of chemicals. With five years of experience, our work includes sites on UGA campus, GA Tech campus, Atlanta parks, nature preserves and residences  within a 100 mile radius of Athens.
